How to shorten and alter a dress

Hi everyone! I hope you get some value from this week’s Youtube video as I am sharing how to shorten and alter a dress. As I am 4ft 11″ I tend to have to shorten many items in my wardrobe. However, I will say that I can find alterations quite boring and a bit of a chore, so, I decided to share how you can alter your dress but make something fun from the scraps. I am loving all the midi dresses in the shops this Summer but they tend to swamp my petite frame. I fell in love with the print of this dress but I was disappointed with how it fitted me so I decided to buy it and shorten the dress.

When it comes to sewing, I find it is so important to measure twice and cut once. Measuring and cutting is the key to getting the perfect fit. When altering, measure from the bottom of the original hem. Use a sewing marker to make dots to use as a guide for cutting. When you are happy with the guide on your dress then you can cut it. Always make sure to allow room for your seam allowance. I remember altering items and I would mess them up because I was impatient and didn’t take the time to measure. If you like the dress I used in this weeks video then you can find it here.

I decided to make a simple fold-over bag from the remaining fabric. All you need to make this is a zipper, some iron-on interfacing and, an old bag chain. Watch the video to see how I made my bag. If you want to make a different style of the bag then you might enjoy this post from earlier this year, where I transformed an old skirt into some makeup bags.
