If you have a small hallway but need extra storage, then check out this post. I took the Ikea Hemnes shoe cabinet and gave it a makeover. I badly needed extra storage in my small entryway. However, when searching for pieces of furniture, I stumbled across the Ikea Hemnes shoe unit with four compartments.
I checked the measurements, and the depth was perfect for my small hallway. I needed a piece of furniture that gave me storage but wasn’t too deep.
Also, I styled it with the Ikea Stockholm round mirror to add more light to my small hallway. Check out how I achieved the look below.

How deep is the Ikea Hemnes shoe cabinet with four compartments?
The measurements for the Hemnes unit is:
Width: 107 cm, Depth: 22 cm, Height: 101 cm
As there are two Ikea Hemnes shoe units, I choose the one with four compartments. This option is narrower compared to the two drawer option.
However, I was worried about my front door not being able to open with ease. Thankfully, this Hemnes unit is only 22 cm deep. So, it allows for my front door to fully open.
If you are worried about your door hitting the Hemnes unit, you could use a bumper on the corner, or a door stopper to prevent banging. I’m loving how this unit now adds storage to my small hallway.
How to paint the Ikea Hemnes shoe cabinet?
- Prep:
Prep your piece by cleaning it down with a degreaser and giving it a scuff with some sandpaper. As you can see from my YouTube video, I painted the shoe cabinet disassembled. However, take extra care when assembling as freshly painted furniture can chip during the assembly.
- Prime:
To give my paint something to adhere to, I applied one coat of primer. I used Colourtrend prime two, and I used a roller to get a smooth finish. Make sure to follow the drying time of the paint between coats.
- Paint:
I went for a durable eggshell finish for my Hemnes paint job. I applied two coats of Coloutrend “Keystone” and allowed each coat fully dry between applications. The eggshell finish has a slight sheen, and it is also more durable and perfect for a high traffic area like the hallway.
- Cure:
Allow your piece to fully dry before assembling and take extra care to avoid chipping.
How do you hang the Ikea Hemnes shoe cabinet?
The Hemnes shoe unit doesn’t come with fixing to attach it to the wall. However, it does include all of the pieces to assemble the piece. So, you will need to purchase a screw and fixing kit.
Be aware that different wall materials can support different loads of weight. For example, a wall made of plaster cannot support as much weight as walls made of wood, concrete or brick.
So, I attached my Hemnes shoe cabinet to a concrete wall. Using my drill, that has a hammer function, I drilled two holes. I then applied a wall plug and screwed the unit into the wall.
If you are attaching the unit to a plaster wall, try these special plugs for plaster.
Styling my small hallway
I originally had a large mirror on this wall, and I loved how it made the hallway look bigger. Although this mirror was pretty, it wasn’t practical, and I needed the storage. So, I hung the round Ikea Stockholm mirror above the shoe unit to reflect the light.
Using some dried flowers I had received as a gift before Christmas, I styled them in an old vase I had from Marks & Spencer. You can find similar here.
Also, I have a basket on top that homes my face masks. I have a mini sanitising station at the door as I have a hand sanitiser and face mask basket to greet me when I come home.
How many shoes can I fit inside the Hemnes unit?
The Hemnes shoe unit can hold eight pairs of shoes. However, if you are like me and have small feet, I can fit 10. Also, the Hemnes show unit is handy for storing scarves in Winter.
