Diy basket bag
I am loving the straw and wicker basket bags that are on trend at the moment. I have seen some amazing DIY’s showing how to make them so I thought I would have a go at making one for myself. The great thing about my DIY is that you will only need some glue, an old handbag strap and a basket. There is no sewing with this DIY and you can quickly knock one up. As always I will have a Youtube video at the bottom of the post where you can watch how I made the basket bag. There are so many ways in which you can personalise your bag, you can get creative and add your own stamp to this DIY.
What you will need
A basket of your choice, Mine is from Sostrene Grenes and it was a steal at €3.40. You can pick one up in a charity shop or you might find one in the likes of TK Maxx or Homesense.
Glue gun and some Gorilla glue, I used my glue gun to apply the piece of fabric to the lid. I used Gorilla glue to apply the straps as gorilla glue is stronger and I didn’t want my straps to snap off when wearing my basket.
Some scrap fabric, I had some hessian fabric in my stash and I used a small square of it for the inside of my lid.
Some string, I added a bow to the front of mine to make it easier to open, this is optional as you could use a clasp or a charm on yours.
To secure my lid, I added the scrap piece of fabric to the inside of the lid. My lid to the basket wasn’t loose however I wanted it to be more secure so I applied the fabric to both sides of the basket using my hot glue gun.
I used the strap and the hardware from an old handbag that I was no longer using. I used some Gorilla glue to apply the hooks to the side of the basket. I measured out where I wanted to put them and then glued them to the basket. I used some tape to hold the hooks in place whilst they were drying. Gorilla glue expands as it dries so always use a small amount. As it is drying you can remove any excess with a cotton bud. With gorilla glue, I have learned that less is certainly more. I have used this glue on a previous project to stick wooden legs to a cabinet, so if its good enough for that then it will certainly keep my hooks in place with the bag.
Once your hardware is fully dry you can then clip your strap on to the hooks and test it out to make sure you are happy with the length. My lid was a little stiff so I decided to add a little bow to make it easier to pull open. Using some string, I tied it into a bow and I then glued this to the lid of the basket. This gives me something to grip when I go to open the bag. I used the gorilla glue to stick this to the lid as it will be less likely to fall off when I pan pulling it open.
You can now have fun styling your new bag with your Summer outfits. My basket is a smaller sized one but it is big enough to fit my iPhone and my card pouch. If you have one of the larger iPhones then I recommend getting a larger sized basket. Please do let me know if you give this a try. I will share my faves over on Instagram on my Insta stories. You can have so much fun picking baskets to personalise and turn into bags, You might like my personalised beach bag DIY from earlier this year. You can find it here and I will share the video below too.
