Garden of pure imagination

Diarmuid Gavins’s Garden at Dundrum shopping centre

This week I got to attend the amazing garden created by Diarmuid Gavin. You might remember this garden from the 2016 Chelsea flower show. It is being showcased over in Dundrum shopping centre and I got to pop over on Tuesday evening to have a little look at it. I also got to meet Diarmuid himself and he is such a lovely guy. He is one of my favourite gardeners as he breaks away from the norm and creates things that really inspire me.

The garden itself is inspired by Willy Wonka. Every fifteen minutes it comes alive, trees start to spin, hedges bob up and down, window boxes start moving and even the little house comes to life. My favourite part of the garden was seeing other peoples reaction to it, especially kids. The look on their faces when they had seen it move was priceless.

It is also a gorgeous garden even when it is not moving. I adored the pots of Hydrangeas and felt guilty as I accidentally killed mine last year ( well, I am still hoping it might come back oops). It definitely inspired me to get a bit more adventurous with my gardening and to experiment with different grasses and heights in my borders. If you are like me and have killed a few plants in your time then you can pick up a few bits from Diarmuid’s little garden shop beside the garden.

If you want to go and see the garden in all of its glory then you can find it tucked in Dundrum shopping centre. It is near the restaurants outside and best of all it is free to see. You can grab a cup of tea from the cute little vintage van and sit on the picnic benches and wait for the garden to come alive.

I put together a little Vlog of my trip just in case you can’t get to see the garden in person. You can find it below.

Let me know if you go out and see the garden and tag me in your pics over on Instagram.

Hello Catherine! I have a subscription to "The English Garden" so I know a bit about the Chelsea show. This Dundrum garden is crazy. I would probably have been a bit spooked out once it started moving =-O. Love the idea of plant pot cocktail. Love the lovely colours of the product you showed (can't smell the rubarb here). Cannot wait for your next post on gardening. Your dress is fabulous.
