How to recycle plastic sweet tins into gift boxes

This time of year I find myself nibbling through lots of tins of chocolates. When I was a kid, I remember the sweet tins were made of tin and my Mam would reuse them to store stuff in the house. Nowadays these are made from plastic but I still wanted to find a way to re-use them. I decided to recycle them and use them as gift boxes for Christmas. You can also recycle them and use them as storage containers. In today’s post, I am going to share how I turned them into cute gift boxes and I also have a video as well which I will link here and below.

The Paint

I used some Rust-oleum spray paints for this DIY. You could also use chalk paint as chalk paint would stick to the plastic. I used the Rust-oleum all surface primer and then some spray paints in different colours. I picked up my spray paint in my local Woodies. If you can get your hands on the spray chalk paint I would recommend this, I couldn’t find it in my local shop but you will find this online. I applied one coat of surface primer and allowed it to fully dry. Once it was dry I sprayed two coats of coloured spray paint. I found that the pink shade took more coats of paint compared to the other colours. I allowed them to fully dry before using them. As it is Winter and colder my paint took longer to dry and cure.

I used some shredded paper and cellophane to wrap up my presents in the sweet tins. These sweet tins are a great size for wrapping up small gifts. I popped in some candles, fluffy stockings and small beauty items into my gift boxes. You can add bows to make them pretty. You could also decoupage your sweet tins to add some pattern to your tins.
