Taking a Primark bag and making it personal

Remember last Summer when everyone had those pretty personalised straw bags and hats? Well, I decided I wanted one for myself. When I was in Pennies (Primark) recently, I saw gorgeous straw shopper bags and straw hats. I decided I was going to have a go and try and personalise them. It was really easy to do and only took me an hour. If you are heading to festivals this year or headed for your Summer holidays and want a fun personalised bag without spending a fortune, then this DIY is for you. As with all my other DIY posts, I have put together a Youtube video which I will leave below and you can check it out.

What you will need

Straw bag or hat, I got mine from Primark, you could also get them cheaply from eBay, Amazon, Wish etc.

Glue gun or a clear drying glue of your choicSequin

ribbon, I got mine from Inspiring ideas.

– An erasable fabric marker

Drawing your name

Now, I am not the best at calligraphy or handwriting, so, I decided to practise on a piece of paper before writing on my bag. Once I was confident, I then used the fabric marker to write on the bag. The fabric marker I got was light in colour, you could get a darker one to make it easier to see your writing. Using the fabric marker I drew my name on the bag, the great thing about the marker is that it wipes off with a damp cloth, so take your time and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You can easily wipe it off and start again if you are not happy with it.

Adding your sequins

Once I was happy with how my name was drawn on my bag, I then applied the sequin ribbon. I had bought 5 metres of ribbon at 45cent a metre. This was loads to do both the hat and bag and I even had ribbon left over.

Using my glue gun I started on the first letter and slowly added the glue, I gently pressed the ribbon into place. Use the name you had written on your bag using your fabric marker as your guide. I took my time and I went letter by letter. Once you are finished you can then wipe away any of the fabric marker using a damp cloth.

This was a really easy DIY, with some practice you will get better at getting the letters perfect. I did my straw hat first and it is a little wonky but when I did the lettering on my straw bag it was much better. So, practise and take your time!
