How To Hack The Ikea Satsumas Ladder, DIY Blanket Ladder

Ikea Satsumas Hack

I am going to share how to transform the Ikea Satsumas ladder in today’s post. For ages, I have been wanting to get one of the gorgeous shabby chic style ladders to hold my blankets and scarfs. However, this old farmhouse, shabby chic style wooden ladders are really expensive to buy! I was having a scroll through Pinterest on how to make one for myself and I found loads of helpful DIY posts, the only thing about them was I would have to get wood, measure, cut, saw and hammer. I was willing to give this a go but when I was scrolling through the new Ikea catalogue I stumbled across the Satsumas ladder flower pot stand.  I went to Ikea to have a look at it and it was exactly what I was looking for, it was a nice size, not too small and not too big or clunky so I decided to buy it and use it for my project.

Prepping and painting the ladder

Like with most Ikea furniture it has a smooth finish to it. This ladder had a silky sheen finish to it, so, in order for the paint to stick to the ladder, you need to lightly sand it. You are not sanding it back bare, you are just scuffing and scratching it to give the paint something to grip to. Make sure to wipe your piece after sanding to remove any dust residue before applying paint.

I then applied one coat of surface primer by Rust-Oleum, I had this leftover from my last project which was my DIY noticeboards. After lightly sanding the piece still felt quite silky so I decided to give it one quick spray of primer to give the paint a better base to stick to.
I then applied two coats of China rose chalky finish furniture paint. This is a gorgeous light pink shade. It is almost white with a pink hue. This is the perfect shade for the decor in my home.

You could also stain your ladder instead of painting it, I painted it to go with my style of decor in my home but you could stain it to give it that farmhouse look.

Seal your paint

If you use chalk paint to paint your piece then make sure to seal it with a wax or varnish, if you use satinwood or eggshell paint then you do not have to seal it. I used light sandpaper to scuff my piece up a little to give it that shabby chic ages look. Once I was happy with the finish I gave it one coat of lacquer and allowed it to fully dry before styling it with my blankets.

I am a lover of blankets, quilted, check, furry and floral! I love them all. I also love chunky scarves too and can’t say no when I see one I love, so, this blanket ladder is the perfect way to display all of them pretty blankets. I evenly hang them on the ladder with the heavy ones on the bottom and lighter ones on the top.
You could also add some pretty light-up string lights to your blanket stand too.
