Video:Mother’s day DIY gifts using chalk paint and jars.

A DIY gift for mothers day

Today over on the Rust-oleum Instagram account I shared these DIY projects but If you missed my Instagram story takeover then don’t worry as I have taken some pictures of what I made and I have included all of the links to the items I used. As it is Mother’s day next weekend I thought it would be nice to upcycle some items that would make a gorgeous gift.

Flower display using some old jars

Whilst scrolling through Pinterest I always stumble across gorgeous upcycled jars. They really are so simple to do yourself. I thought these would make gorgeous vases and be fab as a flower arrangement. Whether you’re visiting your Mam for dinner or even just tea and a chat I thought these would be a gorgeous token to give.

You can pick up jars cheaply in the pound shops. I got my Kilner jars in Woodies DIY in Blanchardstown. You can also save some used jars from the kitchen too. I got the wooden crate in Inspiring ideas in Blanchardstown and they were €3.50. I was delighted when the three jars fitted in the wooden crate.

I choose some pastel shades for my jars as I wanted them to be bright and fresh for Spring. These colours are fab for mothers day but they will be equally as gorgeous for Easter. The perfect centrepiece for your dinner table.

Prep, Prime, Seal.

My three golden rules. I primed my glass jars with the surface primer. I primed the glass jars so the chalk paint would stick better to the glass and I wouldn’t have to use as much chalk paint on the jars. I highly recommend priming your jars. It means you can to do fewer coats of chalk paint and you get better coverage. I sprayed my jars with one coat of primer.

I then painted them with two coats of the chalky finish furniture paint. I allowed each jar to dry fully before I lightly distressed them using some light grit sand paper. I then sealed the jars using some polyurethane finish spray to seal in the paint. Don’t worry if you have no poly spray you can also use some wax to seal your project.

The three shades I used were, China rose, Violet macaroon and Duck egg.

My top tip for painting the glass jars is to make sure the paint is fully dry before applying your second coat. I was a little impatient and didn’t wait and my paint pulled a little. Don’t worry if this happens you as you can wait for it to dry and touch up that spot.

I then finished my jars off with some gorgeous fresh Spring flowers from my local florist. I went for some tulips for this time of year.

Upcycled Mason Jars.

Framing memories

I saw this gorgeous frame in Pennies ( Primark ) for only €7. I love these frames however I am not a fan of the black so I gave it a quick makeover using the same Prep, Prime and Seal technique from above and transformed it. You can add some sentimental photos to your frame or even add some nice quotes and make a really personal gift.

The colour I used one my frame is Powder blue. I loved how the powder blue complimented my matching jars.

Have you got any DIY projects planned for Mother’s day? I would love to know if you do and please let me know if you had a go at the painted jars. Don’t forget to tag me over on Instagram.

Thanks for reading,
Catherine.

** The paint in this post and the items I used in the Instagram takeover were sent to me by rust-oleum. I was not paid to promote and as always all opinions are my own.
