Video: Chalk painted headboard using Rustoleum chalky finish furniture paint.

My headboard make over.

Today I have a little diy video for you and a review of the Rustoleum chalky finish furniture paint.

I have been asked a lot about my opinion on this paint and if I thought it was any good and as I had never used it before I didn’t want to give an opinion on it until I tried it.

Chalk painted headboard in rustoleum chalky finish furniture paint in the shade winter white, shabby chic makeover.

I picked up the paint in my local woodies and I know that this brand is also stocked in B&Q and a lot of other hardware stores. I decided last minute to paint my headboard so needing paint quickly I headed to my local shop.

I used the shade Winter grey. I also picked up the finishing wax. I normally use a varnish to seal my projects but as I wanted to try this brand I decided to use the wax to seal my project instead.

The before.

On my list of things to do in the house was this headboard, you might remember last year I re done my guest bedroom ( you can read that post by clicking here ), I never got around to doing the headboard and I have been hiding the orange pine behind the pillows.

To prep my piece and give the paint the perfect base to grip to I used sugar soap to clean down the headboard of any dirt and grime.

My thoughts on the paint.

Overall I am really pleased with the finish on my piece. What pleased me the most was the ease of buying it as I just went to my local diy shop and I was able to pick up all I needed for my afternoon project. Sometimes with chalk paint you have to go to specialist stockists and if you don’t have the time or live far away from one then that could be an issue. I was able to pick my paint up on my lunch break.

The paint itself wasn’t thick or gloopy. When I opened the can I gave it a good stir and that loosened up the paint and it went onto my piece really smoothly. I didn’t need to water it down to make it thinner, the consistency was really nice to paint with.

I used a roller and a brush on the smaller areas and I didn’t get any drips. I also didn’t get any chalky balls which can happen with some other brands of chalk paint.

The paint had no smell so it was perfect for painting indoors. The wax had a slight smell but not as strong as other waxes I have used. I followed the instructions that was on the tin for waxing. It said to apply the wax and leave it for ten minutes then buff. The more you buff the more shine you get so I lightly buffed mine as I wanted it to stay matte.

I got great coverage too. I done two coats of paint and a third thin coat on the front. It was easy to distress too. I used a light sanding block to scuff up the edges to give it a little bit of detail and contrast.

The cons.

The only thing I could fault was the range of colours available. However when I looked on their website there was more colours in the range however in my local shop they only stocked ten of the shades. Winter white was my favourite from the collection.

Maybe if you live near a larger hardware store they might stock the full range of colours.

Some of the colours I would love to try is the Coral and China rose

The mouldings.

To make my piece look more aged and ornate I used the amazing mouldings from shabby.ie. Click here to view the mouldings available.

I used some no more nails to stick them to the headboard and painted them in the same colour paint as the headboard. If you want to know more about shabby.ie click here as I have a shabby spotlight post featuring Aileen and her shop.
