Ikea shabby chic framed art diy.

Hiya!

I have a little diy post today as I get a lot of questions on how I make the little framed boxes that I share over on Instagram.

These little frames make fantastic presents and can be made in whichever style you choose.

The frames.

I use the Ikea Ribba frame, these are 4.50 euro in my local Ikea. There is a larger Ribba frame for 9 euro that you can fit more items into.

The mdf letters I get in inspiring ideas in Blanchardstown but you could source them locally if not in Dublin, H

Have a look on Facebook for anyone who sells wood crafts locally and could make you some letters.

There is also wood letters on Ebay.

Take apart your frame and I throw out the paper inside, I use the brown panel to glue my backing onto.

The backing.

You can use fabric, wallpaper, gift wrap, decoupage paper or anything that has a print or pattern you love.

I measure the backing and cut to size.

If using fabric make sure to iron before measuing and cutting.

To stick I use a strong glue from craft shop that can be used on wood, fabric and paper.

I don’t recommend pva for this job as it takes too long to dry and is not strong enough to hold the letter in place.

If using fabric make sure it is pulled nice and tight as if it is to loose the weight from your letter can pull it forward.

You can paint your letter in a matching shade for your backing.

You can even decoupage your letters or make glitter ones.

I will add a pic of a glitter one at the end.

Position everything in your frame before gluing.

Also don’t worry if your corners are not perfect once you put the white frame on it hides and glue or wrinkles.

Once you are happy with the positioning then glue everything in place.

Don’t use too much glue as when you press the items down some glue might come out at the sides and you want to keep it as tidy as possible.

You will see in my frame I made a mini stuffed heart.

I used an ink pad and stamp kit from craft shop to personalise the name onto the heart.

I hand stitched the heart using a template I cut, I left a space so I could stuff some filler in and then used a shears to cute around the heart.

This is another love heart design I made for the other box in the picture.

Again I used the stamp kit to make the home sweet home message.

I had some scrap material that I didn’t want to throw out so I made a mini bunting to go with the mini heart.

This will look adorable when on a shelf together with the frame.

This little Emily frame was a customer order for a newborn little girl.

The home sweet home frame is on its way to America to a really nice lady called Sharon who I met through a shabby chic group on Facebook.

If shipping far use plenty of bubble wrap to protect your frame.

Over the last few months I have made loads of these and my best advice to to take your time.

Allow yourself enough time as they can be tricky but with practice you will be flying.

These will also make lovely Christmas presents which you can start making now.

A lot of people ask where I get my items to put in and its mostly from craft shops or ebay, there is not one set place I get things from, if I am in a shop and see something that I know it will fit in the frames then I buy it.

I have seen people put baby shoes in the frames and little keep sake’s that would normally be in a drawer but you can now have them on display.

So get creative and use your imagination.
